Every football player should be routinely strength training the neck in order to mitigate concussion risk. The CDC estimates 1.6-3.8 million sports and recreation related concussions occur each year in the United States. Concussions can wreak havoc on a persons life, causing concentration difficulty, memory loss, excessive fatigue, nausea and other major long-term mental health issues. More concussions occur in football each year than any other sport in America.
Football injuries associated with the brain occur roughly one out of every 5 games according to the brain injury research institute. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 99% of NFL players had post-mortem evidence of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). Furthermore, according to this study, concussions actually occur more often in practice than in games in college football. By increasing neck strength, head acceleration following impact decreases, leading to less likelihood for severe brain injury.
